Movies I Wanna Watch in 2011: Part 1

Here’s a list of 2011 movies I wanna watch. The list got quite long, so I’m posting it in parts of ten movies each.

My criteria for having these movies on my list are pretty broad. One, they have to be 2011 releases locally (though some are still TBA 2011) and second, well their plot must seem interesting enough for me to want to list them here.

Here's the list in alphabetical order (unless there's new additions).

1. All Good Children
Clip: http://vimeo.com/11258884" target="_blank">click here
Starring: David Brazil, Kate Duchêne and Martin Firket
Plot: After the death of their mother, Irish youngsters Dara and Eoin are moved to France to stay with their aunt. There, the boys befriend a local English family and the impressionable Dara falls under the spell of their young daughter Bella. But when she begins to pull away, Dara's feelings for her start to get out of hand.
- “Sounds interesting”

2. All Good Things

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella
Plot: A love story and murder mystery based on the most notorious unsolved murder case in New York history. The original screenplay uses newly discovered facts, court records and speculation as the foundation for an imaginative spellbinding story of family, obsession, love and loss.
- “It has Ryan Gosling. He usually gives good performances doesn’t he.”

3. Art of Love
Starring: Virginia Madsen, Aidan Quinn
Plot: When the teenage daughter of a reclusive family of artists falls in love with an unusual boy at school, she awakens mysterious powers and discovers ancient family secrets that will change her life forever.
- “What mysterious powers? What family secrets? I’m guessing she’s a witch?”

4. The Au Pair
Starring: ?
Plot: The movie follows a young woman who runs from a troubled relationship by spending a fun-filled, romantic summer as a nanny in a posh Hamptons beach house. This dream job takes a frightening turn when she uncovers a dark secret that haunts her and the kids she’s sworn to protect.
- “It’s based on an R.L. Stine book The Sitter. I’ve always wanted to see one of the Fear Streets books made into a movie, so I definitely want to see this.”

5. The Awakening
Starring: Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton
Plot: 1921 England is overwhelmed by the loss and grief of World War I. Hoax exposer Florence Cathcart visits a boarding school to explain sightings of a child ghost. Everything she knew in unravels as the 'missing' begin to show themselves.
- “I like ghost stories, too bad there’s soo few good films of it out there.”

6. Beastly

Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen
Plot: A modern-day take on the "Beauty and the Beast" tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love.
- “The release for this has been pushed back a few times I think. This could turn out very bad, but I’ll still like to see how it turns out”

7. Beautiful Boy

Starring: Michael Sheen, Maria Bello
Plot: A married couple on the verge of separation are leveled by the news their 18-year-old son committed a mass shooting at his college, then took his own life.
- “A different angle on a tragedy. The trailer certainly looks good.”

8. Black Swan

9. Blue Valentine

- “Seems to have received a lot of good reviews and it has two good actors.”

10. Brave New World

Snippet: Being Human the US remake

Well, well, well. Of course there would be a US remake for Being Human seeing how great it is. The remake is made by SyFy, starting in January 2011 and its funny how they call it an original series when its a remake. Have a look the trailer above. It doesn't show much. Yet its kinda odd hearing everything in an American accent. And I kinda get the picture that this werewolf doesn't quite hit the nervousness of George the way Russell Tovey does, but maybe they're making him different from the British one. I'm just going to throw it out there, I don't think this will be as good as the original, but I sure would want to watch it, hopefully SyFy would bring it to Singapore too.

Random Rants/Thoughts: Being Human

Being Human is showing on AXN Beyond Tuesdays at 11pm.

Ok I am a little bit late, oh well very late, since the last episode of the first season I think would be showing this Tuesday. Its just that it seem this series aired without much publicity and that no one seems to be watching it. Which is a pity.

I first heard about the series on the /film podcasts like last year. Have to admit it didn't sound too appealing. A ghost, a werewolf and a vampire? Are they really throwing all the supernatural beings together to make everything more ainteresting? And it's also a British series. Now I love the BBC period miniseries, but somehow I have never really been able to like their contemporary series...well other than the Office. Hence I was never really keen to seeing it. But after seeing a trailer , I decided to give it a go. You can also see the trailer below.

Suffice to say I love the series thus far. Yes you might say, not another vampire show!...that's what I said too. Well it is and soo much more. Because, unlike the popular vampire movies and tv series of today such as Twilight, Underworld, True Blood  and the Vampire Diaries, there really isn't a romance plot here. This series is more about the human drama (funnily enough though none of them are really humans anymore). What we get is a story about this beings, who are no longer human, but are trying to hold on to their humanity and still be human. And its sad, and sometimes heartbreaking. Because what they are now were never their choice. There's bits of humour in it too especially with the Werewolf who can be such a nervous bumbling fellow. And the cast have such great chemistry too. You'd really root for these "monsters" in their efforts to be human.

So lets hope that AXN Beyond would re-air the first season again so that more people can discover this wonderful series and that they also bring on season two.
