Snippet: R21 movies in heartland shops and cinemas?

Read it here.

I heard they were doing some censorship review thing here, but I didn't really know about the details. Apparently some of the issues were whether to allow R21 movies in heartland shops and cinemas. What do I think? I didn't know there was a possibility R21 films could ever get a video release, so I guess this could mean I can finally watch Watchmen(it was only released theatrically and not on video as R21 films currently are not allowed on video). But I mean, if they want to keep all of it away from the heartlands and the young, its fine. Just have them in theaters and shops in town. If this really gets passed, this could mean that we will be able to get titles on video in their unedited version, the version everyone else saw. Here's a list of titles (The Departed, The Wrestler, 30 Days of Night...) that we might just see on dvd/bluray in a store in town...I'm sure movie fans will be pretty happy.

Movie Tracks: The Fountain - Death Is The Road To Awe

Now I did not like the movie much. But I simply love this particular score. It is gorgeous. I have to admit I replayed a particular scene just so I could listen to this piece again.

50 Best Movies [I've Seen] Of The Decade: No 34. Road to Perdition

The story is of a father and son. When a hit man’s son accidentally saw him doing a hit, his wife and younger son are killed by the people he works for. And so they go on the run and to seek revenge.

The story just reels you. The characters are soo interesting and performed brilliantly. You believe they are who they are. And the relationships are just wonderfully explored. You see the compromise and the internal battles these people go through especially Tom Hanks’ and Paul Newman’s character. You’d want too see them through to the very end.

Like most of the movies in my list, I came to see this by chance. I knew nothing of the movie prior to watching it but thought to just give it a go. And its based on a graphic novel. Incredible! Its just great and soo tragic too. It’s a wonder why this doesn’t get mentioned more?

Legion (2010)

**Contains Some Spoiler**

Oh yes I did hear prior to watching it that it was a bad movie and that the story was pretty rubbish. But hey, Paul Bettany’s a handsome guy, and I did see a clip of the little old lady turning all demonic and crawling a wall. So I thought it could be a fun watch.

The story…well yes it’s pretty bad. Let’s see. God has lost faith in mankind and set upon the angels to exterminate humans by making them turn into demonic creatures. Why? So that they would hunt down and kill a girl and her unborn child. But Michael an Angel, who still has faith in mankind, cut his wings and came down to earth. So that he can protect the very girl. Against all the forces that are about to descend upon the diner where she works, in the middle in the desert. All this to ensure that the baby is born.

Now I know that stories don’t have to have real world logic. But shouldn’t it have the logic that makes it work within its world and setting? So many things are wrong here. One. Exterminating humans by turning them into demonic creatures? I don’t know…wouldn’t it have been easier to flood the world. Or an ice age? Yes that one did it for the dinosaurs, I’m sure it would have done it for humans too. Two. One angel and a motley crew of humans against the universe? I don’t see how that would end well for the humans. Angels and guns? It worked for Underworld…but hey they weren’t Angels. And wait for it…we have no idea why the baby had to be saved…even till the very end.

Now the characters didn’t help any of it. All pretty one dimensional, you won’t be invested in what happen to any off them. I could hardly care if any of them died. Actually I’m surprised that some of them survived, given that God wanted them dead.

And by the end of it…you kinda get the picture that the humans were just a set up for a test for the Angels. Primarily, a test for Michael and Gabriel. That just sound soo wrong doesn’t it? How dispensable human lives were for this “test”.

I guess the only redeeming factor was the action aspect of the movie. No, it wasn’t great and awesome by any means. But it was decent enough to be fun. That scene with the old lady and the fight between Michael and Gabriel was pretty cool. Who knew wings were razor sharp right?

Conclusion. Watch it on a rental. And watch it with friends. It’s a fun movie to have a laugh.

Movie Tracks: Casper - Casper's Lullaby

I used to love watching Casper the movie as a kid. It was the time of laser discs and we had the movie in that format and I used to watch it often. Even have the soundtrack too, which was initially bought due to the popular track Remember Me This Way. But you definitely have to check out the other tracks. Especially Casper's Lullaby and One Last Wish. They're quite similar so I've chosen to feature Casper's Lullaby. Both equally sad and haunting and just plain gorgeous, don't you just feel Casper's longing to be human? Anyhow they both get me all nostalgic. And don't you think its quite rare for a kids movie to have a good soundtrack...one without kiddie pop songs?

About Schmidt (2002)

I’ve always heard off About Schmidt. There’ll be like some movie buffs discussing some dark comedy or drama about someone suffering from some mid-life crisis and they’ll go “yeah, it’s no About Schmidt. That movie was good”. Or something along those lines. So the movie has always been one of the movies to watch for me…which I finally did recently.

Let’s start with what I found interesting. Jack Nicholson finally playing a regular man his age! I mean really, all I’ve seen him play are some larger than life characters…there was a mob boss, a mental patient, a crazy guy trying to kill his family in a hotel, the Joker and a string of others. But here he finally plays a normal 60 plus year old guy, who just retired and experiencing a mid life oh well maybe end of life crisis…yes a boring normal guy. And guess what…his wife in the movie is a 60 plus year old woman. I mean what a shocker! So different from what we’re so used to seeing him with. Which usually is a younger woman, usually 20 years his junior in reel and real life too right.

I guess the part I like about the movie is that it shows a slice of middle America, without glossifying it. People don’t walk out of their house looking like they stepped out of Vogue right? And there can’t always be some high drama right? Life can be lonely, hard and unremarkable, that's what Schmidt is about to realize the first days of his retirement. It’s nice to sometime see it portrayed without a myriad of embellishments.

But this is a dark comedy of sorts about an old depressed guy, so we do get the usual odd bunch of characters. From the dim witted Randall, Schmidt’s future son in law, to the hippie mother earth type of character, Roberta, Randall’s mother. But somehow I felt that most of the characters all felt dull, they felt monotonous without any colour and as if trapped in some forgotten time…a bit like those in Napoleon Dynamite I thought. I guess all this was intentional…to illustrate the way Schmidt was unable to connect with any of them. But like Napoleon Dynamite I didn’t like any of it.

Suffice to say. I didn’t enjoy the movie. I think I understood what it was trying to put across mostly. Schmidt’s inability to connect with the people around him, the emptiness he felt and how he saw his life has amounted to nothing, until near the end at least, where he breaks down when he finally realize that he had undoubtedly made a difference to one life. But I hardly found any bit of the movie funny…even though it’s suppose to be a comedy of sorts…dark comedy at the very least. They only hit the depressing mark for me. And so dull is the word for this movie overall.
