Out & About: DVDs
DVDs
The past week, there's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Matthew McConaughey's 100th romantic comedy...yeah I know!Does he do anything other than romantic comedies recently?. And for the kids, Monsters vs. Aliens. Two movies I'm not the least bit interested in.

Whiteout (2009)
For the first time in a long time I actually went to a theater to watch a movie (I usually rent). I watched Whiteout the past week. I know, I know...I'm a movie geek, I've done my research, of course I knew it wasn't really a good movie coming into it. And believe it or not my other choice was District 9. But District 9 was down to one theater and one timing, by the time the movie ends it would be close to midnight. The theater it was showing at was also quite a distance from my home and seeing that I had work the next day, I picked Whiteout which was showing at a closer theater. Don't get me wrong though, I was still looking forward Whiteout. It is based on a graphic novel I had read and rather like, so I'm always interested how the adaptation would turn out. I was also in the mood for some action thrillers with cool action sequences and great sound effect, some of the stuff I had missed not seeing movies in the theaters.
Right off the bat, we see the changes that were made for the movie. The first scene is that on board of a Russian plane some 50 years ago, where a gunfight occurs and they crash and burn. Already we know there must be something they were fighting about, and this new murder mystery we're about to embark upon will tie to this fight that took place decades ago. Things cannot be more plainly obvious for the audiences anymore. Next scene is the present, Carrie heads up to her room strips and takes a shower. OMG. Seriously...it was soo corny cheesy. Its like a thank you to the audience...that pretty much spoke in this manner "Thank you for choosing Whiteout a movie that takes place in Antarctica where you can see virtually no skin because people are wrapped up in layers and layers of clothes...but because you chose us anyway here is scene of semi nude Kate Beckinsale". I hate it when movies choose to put in such scenes when they're utterly necessary. Then we meet the first murder victim and Carrie has a flashback...which just seem to be a pretty weak effort to make Carrie be this Marshal with a bad traumatised past. It just doesn't fit that she was all fine and dandy all the time before this right until she saw a dead body...at least in the graphic novel, she always had the weight of her past on her. Another thing the movie does not do quite as well as the novel was that it did not quite explain why there were these different bases, and what were all those people doing there in the middle of nowhere...oh well yes they were all scientists. The dialogue...yeah that wasn't that great too. They spoke every little thing that we already knew and they the characters as professionals in their field would also know, that just need not be spoken out out loud. "This is a cargo ship" yes it was obvious. Now I think the two saving grace for the movie was the landscape...because it was just beautiful and the action scenes involving the safety line during whiteouts...that was pretty hearts-stopping exhilarating. Lose that line lose your life. Now I wonder how that kind of wind just doesn't literally knock the wind out you rather than just sweep you off into oblivion. All in all...I think this was a more fitting as a rental watch. And even though the graphic novel did not really have a huge revelation nor a climatic end that I was expecting...between the movie and the novel, check out the novel.

A Barbie Movie
Barbie is getting a live-action feature. You can read it here. Is it any surprise? Only a matter of time really isn't it, what with several toys and games having been made or are in various stages of production (Transformers, GI Joe, Battleship, Monopoly, The Sims just to name a few). The thing with Barbie (and also for the Sims) is that there is no story to them. I mean I know Barbie has churn out book series and such, but essentially they are these empty vessels you dream up stories for...so basically they could do anything with the movie. The only recognizable thing for Barbie, is her blondness and her perfectness.

Adaptations...Adaptations....The Host and Sweet Valley Series.
Stephenie Meyer's The Host is getting the film treatment. Read it here. Cool. I have the book on my shelf. Have yet to read it. Another Twilight for me perhaps?
Diablo Cody to write and produce an adaptation of the Sweet Valley High books. Read it here. The book series have been around since forever. No seriously since the early 1980's. And after every few years or so they would revamp the whole thing and churn out a new series/spin-off suited for the particular time/decade. Basically I'm psyched. As a child I used to read several of its series, and I had particularly enjoyed the Sweet Valley High Senior Year series. So it would be great to revisit the Sweet Valley world. The Book series was turned into a TV series back in the mid 90's so I i think it will be interesting to see what Diablo will do to it now.

Out & About: DVDs and New Moon Movie Tie-In
DVDs
Saw Sunshine Cleaning and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian in the stores the past week...Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, wow that's a mouthful. I remember seeing the first Night of the Museum. I found it horribly annoying, filled with the usual family friendly fluff...heard the sequel is a step down...I'll pass. Now Sunshine Cleaning, I've said it earlier...I'm a sucker for these quirky indie flicks...I have a feeling I'd enjoy this. Pity though, the dvd has such an ugly cover art (they did not go with the theatrical poster)...
Movie Tie-In
The New Moon movie tie-in book in stores...it may have been for a while...but I only saw it yesterday. And I've got to say, seeing it up close, I find myself disliking it more. Have never been a fan of movie tie-in books. Always much prefer their original covers. Anyhow back to New Moon...now it looks nothing more than a Harlequin romance novel.
Ode to the Indie
I watched a past episode of the The Rotten Tomatoes Show, and they had featured a tribute song to Indie flicks. I have to say...I'm quite a sucker for these more mainstream indie movies (they are after all the more accessible ones) and yes after a while you notice they all seem to have the same stuff...geeky guy get attractive (not so geeky) girl, the most common...I would love to see a reversal of that. Anyhow Brett & Ellen from The Rotten Tomatoes Show have conjured up an ode that is both cute and funny. Take a look and see if you can recognize some of the movies.

New...New Moon Trailer
**Update**
Its the very trailer that is suppose to premiere at the MTV Music Awards which takes place later today.
So the HD trailer is out. Check it out below.
Out & About: DVDs This Week
DVDs
Out this week, or more should I say the past week, X-Men Origins - Wolverine. This movie from what's been said everywhere...isn't all that great (I can't say myself as I have yet to see it), but I bet the dvd will sell very well. And for the tweens...there's Disney's Princess Protection Program.
DVD Deals
Boy A...the region 3 was released only some 4 months ago retailing for at least $20. The price has now dropped to $12.90 or was it $14.90? Now the dvd is pretty bare (even the region 1 is so) with absolutely no special special features...so it should have never retailed at 20 bucks in the first place. Anyhow, I have caught the movie...and it is good...highly recommend it and I wished it had commentaries from director, Andrew Garfield, the guy who played Boy A and Jonathan Trigell, the guy who wrote the book upon which the movie is based on...that would be some interesting stuff.
I'm not a fan of Titanic...but I'm sure there are many out there. I'm pretty sure I saw this three disc edition (unless there other editions in blue, packaged the same way) going for $14.90. That's a steal...cause if you've checked out the features its supposed to have...its one loaded dvd. Definitely for the fans.
