Out & About: DVDs This Week

DVDs

Out this week, Hannah Montana the Movie, Flash of Genius, The Great Buck Howard and Young Victoria. And The Education of Charlie Banks which was released last week...the one I missed last week.

For Rental

I actually saw The Last Houst on the Left, I think Region 1, if not Region 2, available for rent at Laserflair. The movie which only opened here on 20 August, is still showing at several cinemas.

The Volturi Revealed

Full character posters of the Volturi has been revealed. They are Aro, Marcus, Caius, Alec and Jane. You can go to flixster or comingsoon.net to see larger images of the posters but by now you can find them at almost all movie sites. People Magazine also has three movie stills with the Volturi.

I think they look pretty good. Jane looks like a horribly serious little thing and Alec... he looks kinda bratty doesn't he. Though it does seem they overdid the whole red eyes...its looks more painted on rather than just contacts.

Trailer Watch: Avatar

The hype for this movie is huge. I see stuff about Avatar everywhere. Its pretty much on every movie news and blog site out there. And I've only checked out about it now just before checking out the recently released trailer. I mean seriously I know nuts about it...storywise...something about some humans and some alien race...and its not something that would appeal to me generally...thus it has taken me this long to be the least bit interested about it.

Fanboys at Comic Con and Industry people who have seen a few minutes of the footage seemed to have eat it all up...saying that the footage of the movie was...mindblowing, breath taking...amazing...just some of the words being thrown around. And now the trailer is out...I finally get to see what the fuss is all about.

And well what is the fuss about? I don't get it. Yes the imagery is clear, visually stunning and somewhat beautiful I guess....I could agree. But does it present something new?...Visually? Err I don't think so. I think it was somewhat of a disappointment. I expected more, because of the starry praise its been receiving. For a few seconds...when all we saw was the alien planet and creatures...I thought it all looked like a really terrifically done video game cut scene. Doesn't the Final Fantasy series does scenes just as well? And unlike some of the people who saw the footage that said the CGI looked incredibly real and that they believe this world they're seeing...well I don't (granted of course I'm seeing the trailer in 2D and they're seeing minutes of footage in 3D). I don't believe in it one bit...it looks like what it is. Made-up world and creatures.

Of course I'm just talking about how it looks, the story itself could be a different matter. It could be thoroughly brilliant, and I think it would be the story that could make Avatar an amazing movie...not the visuals.

Posters Galore: Dorian Gray

Impawards has the new Dorian Gray UK poster.

Yes Dorian is evil. He's giving you the evil stare. Part of him is burning away...and is that a a statue of a gargoyle on that building in the background?

And we have Rebecca Hall on his right as Emily Wotton next to Henry Wotton. If you've never heard of her character before, its because she doesn't exist in the book. She's specially added in the movie I guess to add a few sparks. Meanwhile we've seen or heard close to nothing on Sibyl Vane, when she is Dorian's first love. So I'm not loving the idea of Emily Wotton at all. But we'll have to see.

Random Rants/Thoughts: The Virgin Suicides Region 1 DVD

This is one of my favourite movies ever...adapted from one of my favorite books. I actually own the VCD...but the quality is inferior of course. So I was horribly tempted to buy this yesterday...when I saw the region 1 DVD at HMV going for less that $14. Yes I know...its cheap, especially for a region 1 DVD and an awfully good movie to boot.I have actually rented the same DVD before...but I couldn't remember if there was a commentary. If there was, I was definitely going to get it. But I was horribly dissapointed...there is none. How can there be no commentary for such a great movie. Crap movies with no artistic direction get commentaries...and this doesn't?

Anyhow...its been almost 10 years since it was first released theatrically...I think its time Sofia Coppola round up her cast, do a feature commentary and release a fully loaded DVD or Blu-ray for its 10 years anniversary. Don't you think?

Trailer Watch: New Moon Trailer

Well apparently Bandslam is already in theaters...yeah I know, who knew right? And with that came the new, New Moon trailer. And of course pretty much within a few hours the trailer has leaked online.

I think its been said before, its not exactly a typical trailer. It has a bunch of clips of the movie, coupled with voice overs and actual clips of Taylor Lautner talking and selling his character Jacob. I think we should call it the Team Jacob trailer. And yes we got to see a sneak of the wolf pack, Jane and is that the Volturi's lair? More please.

Posters Galore: Dorian Gray

Empire magazine has the new Dorian Gray poster. Click here to see a larger image at Empire.

I rather like it. Half the handsome Dorian, the other half, his painting self...already cracking and peeling. Though I've never imagined his painting self, cracking and peeling, like you know actual paintings do...I had imagine actual physical decay of his painting self...much like that in the 1945 movie...but done better.

Anyhow that's a pretty devious look about him. A wicked glimmer of a smile in his eyes.

New Moon 14 Second Trailer Preview

The New Moon 14 second trailer preview has been out for a while now. I'm not too sure when the actual trailer is going to be realeased. Its supposedly attached with Bandslam's theatrical run? Anyhow, I have seen this clip a few times now...and this shot (above) I'm higlighting strikes me as incredible weird and cartoonish. Somehow Jacob's head just seems so far off the rest of his body. A bad shot. You can see the actual clip below.

Megan Fox Does a Public Service Announcement

This was released a few days ago...in line with her new movie Jennifer's Body...definitely cheeky. Maybe all we need is the Nike logo. Just Do It.

Kick-Ass Trailer and Clips - looks to be a fun, goofy, violent and bloody affair

A trailer and several clips of Kick-Ass that was shown at the San Diego Comic-con has leaked online. You can view all of them here. I suggest you hurry because it is a bootleg and it will just as soon be pulled by the Studios. Having said that, the footage isn't the best of quality, its grainy and and the sound hardly audible but its worth it. As the title suggests the movie looks Kick-Ass.

IMDB has the plot synopsis as

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.

I first took notice of it after seeing the pic above in Empire. An armed schoolgirl...kinda reminds me of Mathilda in Leon: The Professional. And other stills showing teenagers in the some goofy colourful superhero costumes...made me think of Sky High (an ejoyable Disney kids superhero school movie)...so I thought this could be an interesting flick. After seeing those clips...I think I got the mix quite right...from the absolute lethalness of Hit Girl and the bumbling awkwardness and foolishness of Dave. It looks to be a fun, goofy, violent and bloody affair. I am soo looking forward to this. Release some official clips already...what are they waiting for?

Random Rants/Thoughts: I Watch More DVDs than regular TV programming...

I watch more DVDs than regular TV programming. When I do watch a show on TV, sometime when I am not able to catch or fully understand a scene or what a character is saying, I find myself reach for the remote control. And start continually pressing the rewind button trying to repeat the scene again. Yeah I'm so used to subtitles and scene selections of dvds ;)

Trailer Watch: The Vampire's Assistant

First new stills, than the poster and now we have the trailer. Boy are they throwing all they have at us this past week.

I've said this before, The Vampire's Assistant is giving me the 80's kids fantasy movie vibe...and its there in the trailer too. And trailer, it looks ok I guess...a hint of humour here and there. I'll still try and catch it when it comes out. As for a possible sequel (there are a few books in the series) if this movie goes well...not much of that I think. Mainly because, there is too much lag time for the next one, by then the kid actor would have grown up...and that won't work will it...his character is a Vamp, they don't grow old remember. Unless of course they recast. But I don't see them doing that for each sequel, so I think they'll end this movie neatly.

Trailer Watch: Zombieland

Myspace has the new Zombieland red band trailer.

The green band trailer previously looked pretty good. But this new trailer...makes the movie look like some seriously awesome fun. I'm definitely going to look out for this one.

Add this to Jennifer's Body.

Posters Galore: Whiteout

Myspace TrailerPark has the bigger version of the poster which you can view here.

This one as you can see, has the pretty face of Kate Beckinsale in what looks like its either frozen or she's trapped in freak blizzard. I think this poster does little compared to all the other ones that has been released. All we get is, she's in a cold place.

While these ones tell us more of what the movie, which is a mystery thriller, is supposed to be about. One its cold. Two she has a gun...she could be a cop...which she is if you still don't know. Three there's a murder...or murders

Trailer Watch: The Lovely Bones

Loved the book. So naturally for me, I've been anticipating this movie from the very beginning. The trailer has finally been released like 3 days ago. You can view it here. And behind the scenes clip here. Now I wonder when we'll get a poster.

Well yeah...not exactly a fan of the trailer here. Not exactly how I pictured the movie to look like. I thought it would be a very dark sombre movie, visually. And the heaven scenes in the trailer...its just soo colourful...it reminds me much of Across the Universe in its use of bright cheery colours and fantastical aspects. I'm not sure I like the whole fantastical thing going on...was it there in the books. I know the heaven painted in the book was not convetional but was it that fantastical - its been a few years since I've read the book last.

Susie's sister Lindsey...oh my...she looks too old to be the younger sister isn't she, especially at the point of Susie's death (Lindsey was what? 13?). I mean Susie looks like a child...you can't exactly have the younger sister to look soo much older. I know the character ages until about 20 at the end of the book, so they would need an actress who can fit into that...but I think they overshot a little haven't they.

Posters Galore: The Vampire's Assistant

Cinematical.com has the new the Vampire's Assistant poster.

I think it looks rather old school doesn't it? Like an 80's or early 90's kids fantasy movie. And it looks kinda similar to these two...

But more of the Lord of the Rings right? The same way the hand is positioned and the character looking straight at the camera.

300 airing next Sunday at 10pm on Channel 5

I actually enjoyed 300, a movie I thought I never would. It soo much a guy movie... with not much of a plot really, just you know, smaller battlescene after another and finally culminating to the final one that eliminate them all...at least if I remember correctly...it is afterall a story about the Spartans battling the Persians at Thermopylae. But the action sequences were cool. And the visuals were stunning. Amazing what they did with just...what was it? Blue? Or Green screen? So yeah I enjoyed watching it.

I never expected Channel 5 to air the movie. Basically because it has violence and nudity and was rated M18 when it was released theatrically...and its advisory was something like graphic battle sequences throughout. So I just about laughed when I saw the ad on TV yesterday. When they finish cutting out all those scenes...how much of the movie exactly is going to be left? Maybe I'll catch it again just to see.

New Pictures of The Vampire's Assistant

The movie originally went by the name Cirque Du Freak the same as the book upon which it is based on. It recently had a name change earlier this month and now goes under the name The Vampire's Assistant. Reason behind the name change? Who knows...but it is the extended title for book 2 of the series. Maybe the studios decided to bank in with the recent popularity of vampires in pictures? I can see that. Anyhow its one of the movies in my movies to watch in 2009 list.

Flixster has the plot summary as:

A young boy named Darren Shan meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a Vampire. After a series of events Darren must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak and become a Vampire.

New pictures of the movie of have surfaced on http://hollywood.blog.nl which you can view here.

I have never read the book. But I find the plot rather interesting. The whole traveling freakshow filled with actual monsters. And wait...we have a child vampire here. Now will they touch on the fact that he will forever be trapped in a boy's body. That will be interesting. Hopefully this will be somewhat good...a lot of these children books adaptation have not gone well...remember Inkheart, The Seeker The Dark is Rising and Eragon...total letdown.

Trailer Watch: Jennifer's Body

Yes, its that movie where Megan Fox (is this her first leading role?) plays a boy eating chearleader...oh wait...no, right... she can go both ways...as its revealed by the end of the trailer.

I liked the line in the trailer where Amanda Seyfried's character says " I mean, she's (Jennifer) actually evil. Not high school evil. "...it reminds me of the Queen bee Regina George in Mean Girls, a movie Amanda Seyfried also stars in, who is high school evil.

I think the trailer looks pretty good and funny. It could be a good horror comedy. Not many of those eh...So I actually would like to see this.

This trailer has been out for a while now, and there's also another trailer which was released much earlier, a red band one...where we get to see a sneak of Jennifer becoming the monster and feed. View it here.

Posters Galore: Surrogates

A new series of Surrogates movie posters have been released. One of them above, the rest of them, you can view at IGN.com here. All of them featuring what seems like ads with models...who are robotic surrogates...

Flixster has the plot summary as:

People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates — sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It’s an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don’t exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer (BRUCE WILLIS) discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery.
I kinda find this series of posters look very much like the poster for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Remember this one?

Both showing a person with a human exterior exposing their robotic interior and even the title card is somewhat similar down to the choice of colours, red and white.
