The hype for this movie is huge. I see stuff about Avatar everywhere. Its pretty much on every movie news and blog site out there. And I've only checked out about it now just before checking out the recently released trailer. I mean seriously I know nuts about it...storywise...something about some humans and some alien race...and its not something that would appeal to me generally...thus it has taken me this long to be the least bit interested about it.
Fanboys at Comic Con and Industry people who have seen a few minutes of the footage seemed to have eat it all up...saying that the footage of the movie was...mindblowing, breath taking...amazing...just some of the words being thrown around. And now the trailer is out...I finally get to see what the fuss is all about.
And well what is the fuss about? I don't get it. Yes the imagery is clear, visually stunning and somewhat beautiful I guess....I could agree. But does it present something new?...Visually? Err I don't think so. I think it was somewhat of a disappointment. I expected more, because of the starry praise its been receiving. For a few seconds...when all we saw was the alien planet and creatures...I thought it all looked like a really terrifically done video game cut scene. Doesn't the Final Fantasy series does scenes just as well? And unlike some of the people who saw the footage that said the CGI looked incredibly real and that they believe this world they're seeing...well I don't (granted of course I'm seeing the trailer in 2D and they're seeing minutes of footage in 3D). I don't believe in it one bit...it looks like what it is. Made-up world and creatures.
Of course I'm just talking about how it looks, the story itself could be a different matter. It could be thoroughly brilliant, and I think it would be the story that could make Avatar an amazing movie...not the visuals.
