I think the first time I watched this was probably 10 years ago...I was still a kid then, and most likely I saw it at my cousin's place. And I remembered I liked it. I thought it was cool and Stephen Dorff as Deacon Frost...yes he was definitely the coolest wasn't he...
Anyhow...Channel 5 one of the local channels is showing Blade Trinity soon...soo I thought lets see Blade again and see if it ages well and is as good as I had thought it was.
I've always thought that Wesley Snipes is a pretty wooden actor...I guess he really is... him as Blade...well he was wooden alright. I know that the character Blade is suppose to be this stiff serious fellow...because of his condition and the life he leads...that doesn't leave much room for much overt show of emotions...and yet we can't exactly say his performance here is bravo right.
The story is interesting at least. Blade is half vampire half human, as his mother was bitten when she was pregnant with him. He survives the birth but grew up wild without parents until he met Whistler who raises him and taught him to fight. Fight against the vampires that is...Then we meet the other vampires and who unlike Blade, who loathes what he is, celebrate their very being...the proudest and the brat of the town none other than Deacon Frost played by Stephen Dorff. Oh how I love that name...Deacon Frost...what a brilliant name for a villain.
Anyway Deacon...is the brat...the ambitious brat...with the confidence and swagger of youth (its a funny word to use for vampires I know) who plans to overthrow the old vampires and make himself the leader of the coven...in fact he wishes to gain some great ancient vampire power and rule over all the vampires...And I guess somewhere along there, Blade's and his paths meet...
So lots of action ensue...pretty cool action sequences here and there. But...the final face off...oh...it was soo funny...I didn't remember it was that bad. Its not just how the cgi was horrible. But it was the whole gaining some unfathomable power...to rule over everyone else kinda plot...it was soo bad. And the way Deacon managed to eliminate and capture the elder vampires...I mean I know he's the bad a** punk but...if the gang of elder vampires can survive hundreds of years in the volatile world...I'm sure one or two can outplay Deacon ...you would've have thought right...but noo...all of their years...they still fell into his trap?? And then of course we come to the bad cgi power gaining scene...where Deacon is able to regenerate limbs that were cut off...Deacon's death scene...well that was the worst of all...He expanded into a big giant blob and exploded (Amazingly you can read and see the stills of his movie death
here)...what a way to go.
Overall...despite you know... some holes in the story...wooden acting...bad ending and bad special effect. It was a fairly fun action movie...I don't expect much from them anyway...its not exactly a movie I would rewatch anytime soon simply because I've seen much better(I'm talking about Underworld here)...And it has to be said that Stephen Dorff played a pretty good villain. He had a certain air and swagger about him that made him a very believable villain in Deacon (I've never read the comic book soo I don't know if he portrayed Deacon faithfully). And where has this guy been since then anyway?
